Party for Parents” will expose underage and binge drinking
culture
DATE:
Saturday,
June 30, 2007
TIME: Tour times available for reservation
between 5pm – 9pm. Tours last approximately 25 minutes.
PLACE: Camarillo, CA. Address will be
given when reservations are made.
FREE! Refreshments will be provided.
Adults only, please.
A home in the Spanish Hills area of Camarillo will be set
up to portray a local teen drinking party.
Parents
and other adults will have the opportunity to tour through
the rooms of the house and see various activities that have
become a “normal” part of teen parties in Ventura
County. Teen actors from throughout the County will play the
parts of young people engaging in the dangerous activities
and will express the attitudes and concerns that teens have
reported in Straight Up focus groups.
“Parents
don’t realize how crazy it gets” was a frequent
comment among the approximately one thousand Ventura County
high school and college students who participated in Straight
Up workshops examining local underage and binge drinking issues.
Most teens agreed that it is a mistake for parents to believe
that they don’t need to worry because their teen is
a “good kid” or doing well in school.
“Many
parents feel there’s not much they can do. They are
just told to talk to their teens,” says Straight Up
Project Director Katherine Boring. “A better understanding
of the specific issues teens are dealing with today, and the
culture of risky behaviors, will allow parents to have more
relevant and meaningful dialogue with their teens, and to
set clear expectations and implement family policies that
help keep their teens safe.”
The
event will include information about social and community
factors that allow and encourage underage and binge drinking,
and suggestions of things parents and community members can
do to help reduce the problems. The tour will take about 25
minutes and guests are invited to stay for discussion and
refreshments afterwards. Adults only are invited to this event.
There is no fee.
