New blog features many viewpoints on alcohol issues
Youth and adult voices are heard online
Straight Up Ventura County has debuted a new blog that features writing by (and for) youth and parents on the subject of underage and binge drinking and impaired driving in Ventura County.
Please show your support for the young people speaking up on these important issues by reading and responding with comments on the Straight Up blog.
Examples of the voices heard on the blog:
-
“The night of our dance was certainly a memorable one; a night so memorable, I try to forget it, but can’t.” Eighteen-year-old Natasha Nicole’s harrowing entry while she witnesses a drunk friend’s near-assault is one of the many first-person viewpoints expressed on the blog. Youth share these stories to expose the problem that underage and binge drinking has become in this county.
-
“A single wrong choice can impair the thought process and lead to more wrong choices, sometimes causing fatal consequences,” states Brandon F., commenting on the recent death of a Southern California teen who had been speeding, texting – and drinking. Brandon, a sixteen-year-old Ventura student, is one of the young people raising their voice against impaired driving.
- “Are they going to do it anyway? Can parents really make a difference?” Parents and other adults raise questions like these and offer resources for those looking for answers. Jeanie Hays, a regular contributor to the blog and a Ventura County parent, encourages discussion and offers sites and tips for adults wanting more information about underage and binge drinking.

The blog will continue to grow as the community of concerned youth and adults continue to grow. Straight Up’s online resources are a small part of its “toolkit” to encourage discussion about these issues. Straight Up also engages youth and adults by offering workshops, youth leadership training, video resources, and Reality Parties for Parents.
